One of the main news in Spain over the past few days has been the scandal surrounding the choice of the country’s representative at Eurovision. This year the winner of the national selection was the dance electro-pop group Nebulossa. They will perform their hit called Zorra in the final of the international Eurovision Song Contest 2024, which will be held on May 11 in the Swedish city of Malmo. The streaming service Spotify recognized the track Zorra as the most viral tune in Spain, and it rose to 3rd place in the world rankings.

However, the title of the song, as well as its provocative lyrics, caused heated controversy in Spanish society. Feminist associations in the country criticized it and demanded that it be removed from the competition as insulting women’s dignity. They were also supported by the Spanish Bishop José Ignacio Munilla. The thing is that the word “zorra”, which means “fox”, in addition to its animalistic interpretation, is perceived as a sexist insult. When spoken of women, it means “whore.” At the same time, the male version of the word is devoid of the derogatory connotation of the female version and is interpreted as a “cunning scoundrel.”

The lead singer of the group Nebulossa, Maria Bas, claims that the song is dedicated to protecting women’s rights and protests against their humiliation. “I often felt marginalized and a victim of abuse, and this word accompanied me for a long time until I decided to pull myself together and release everything I was holding inside,” the singer told state news agency Efe.

Spain’s Minister of Equality Ana Redondo Garcia and the country’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed their support for the Nebulossa group. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the organizer of Eurovision, put an end to the disagreements by approving the participation of the song Zorra in the competition.
