It is here that the greatest density of wineries in the region is concentrated and the largest and most famous cellars are located.

Tourists come to Haro to take a vineyard tour and tasting and taste the best Rioja wines, but many pleasant surprises await them along the way. Guests are offered a large selection of active entertainment, exciting gastronomic experiences, participation in cultural events, visits to historical and religious buildings, and much more. However, it is worth recognizing that Haro in Spain is famous primarily for the production of Rioja red wine and the annual wine festival, the main event of which is wine battles.

Our guide to Haro will help you effortlessly plan your winery visits and tastings, choose hotels, where to stay and restaurants, where to eat, what to see, and what to do.

Barrio de la Estacion

If you don’t have things to do in Haro, start with Barrio de la Estacion. This area adjacent to the train station is home to the largest concentration of wineries in the world. Its construction was carried out in the mid-19th century around the railway station from here Rioja wine was sent to France to make up for the losses of local farmers after the defeat of their vineyards by phylloxera epidemics.

Now Barrio de la Estacion is a popular tourist destination, where the largest wineries in the region are located. It is here that travelers come on Haro winery tour to wine tasting and visit the largest bodegas in Rioja. They are located just a few minutes walk away from each other and offer booked tours. In addition, local wineries are known for their luxury bars, where you can buy a glass of wine without visiting the tasting or the winery itself — it is much cheaper and does not require a reservation.

Basilica of Our Lady of La Vega (Basilica de Nuestra Senora de la Vega)

The Basilica of Our Lady of La Vega is one of the most important and best-preserved religious buildings in Haro. It is believed that it was built in the 10th century. However, the building acquired its modern appearance later as a result of several reconstructions. The building attracts attention with a baroque doorway in the form of a semicircular arch with images of Saints Peter and Paul. The main accent of the interior decoration is the gilded altar in the Baroque style. It contains the figure of the Virgin of La Vega and frescoes with angels and scenes from the life of the Virgin. The image of the Virgin of La Vega in the Gothic style (XIV century) also attracts attention. She is represented seated on a throne with a baby in her left hand and a bouquet of ears of barley in her right. One of the miracles attributed to the Virgin of La Vega is turning barley into wheat so that a poor family could pay off their debts.

Every year a big festival is held in Haro dedicated to its patroness, the Virgin of La Vega. The church can be visited for free during opening hours: Monday to Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.

The 16th-century Church of Santo Tomas (also known as the Parish of St. Thomas the Apostle) is one of Haro’s most beautiful sights. It stands on the second-highest hill in the city, called La Mota or La Atalaya, which makes it visible from almost anywhere in Haro. In 1931 it was declared a National Historic and Artistic Monument. The church has impressive architecture and rich decoration. Note its three naves with fifteen star-finned vaults and various geometric arches with columns and pilasters. The church organ deserves special mention. It is known that intervention in its structure was carried out in 1739, after which it acquired its modern appearance.

The Town Hall is a beautiful historical building and is a famous landmark in Haro. It was built in the 18th century in a neoclassical style from cut stone. Its facade depicts the city’s coat of arms in the Baroque style, and also has the inscription “During the reign of Charles III / 1769.” The façade is crowned by a clock installed in 1857. The most eye-catching architectural element of the first level of the building is the semicircular arches that form the arcades. Sometimes wine barrels are placed here, and then this place becomes especially popular for photos.

Bendaña Palace

The unusual historical building of Bendaña Palasis, built from cut stone, boasts two facades — the 16th and 18th centuries. Particularly noteworthy is the 15th-century Mudejar gallery, unique to La Rioja, with intertwined stars and flowers. Currently, this building houses the Aro Tourist Office.

The Palace of the Counts of Haro is a beautiful old building. It was erected at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, which was reflected in its architectural appearance. It clearly shows the trends of the early Renaissance with its strict restraint, as well as Baroque features with a characteristic passion for rich decor. The decoration of the building was Solomon columns, a broken pediment and spherical-pyramidal acroteria in the style of El Escorial.

Palacio de las Bezaras

Palacio de las Bezaras is an ancient building of the 18th century in the Baroque style. It is also known as the “Stork Palace” because these beautiful birds have built a large nest on it. The building is remarkable for its architecture and beautiful decorations. Also here you can see a pillory, rare for Haro, which was used for justice.
