How supermarkets in Spain will work during Semana Santa and Easter celebrations
Semana Santa (Holy Week) in Spain, which began on 24 March, has affected the opening schedules of major retail chains. As each autonomous community celebrates Easter week differently, with the exception of the bank holidays of Good Friday (29 March), the opening hours and days of major shops vary.
Mercadona supermarkets will be closed on Easter Sunday (31 March), as well as on Holy Thursday (28 March) and Good Friday. The latter does not apply to Catalonia and the Valencian Community, where both days are considered normal working days. However, in tourist areas, shops will be open until midday on Good Friday. This information can be verified on the retailer’s website.
Most Supercor and Hipercor supermarkets, owned by the El Corte Inglés group, will be open from 09:00 to 22:00. But for Catalonia and the Valencian Community, a special schedule will be activated for the holidays — from 11:00 to 21:00.
The opening hours of Lidl shops for Easter 2024 vary depending on their location. Some will be open throughout the week, including Good Friday. There may also be reduced opening hours from 9:00 to 15:00 instead of the usual 9:00 to 22:00. It is easy to check the timetable of your nearest outlet on the Lidl website.
Carrefour shop schedules depend on which Semana Santa days are weekends in a particular autonomous community. Carrefour Express hypermarkets are scheduled to be open throughout Holy Week, while the rest of the group’s outlets will close on Holy Thursday and Good Friday. For Catalonia and the Valencian Community, Easter Monday (1 April) will also be a non-working day.
Dia supermarkets will be open throughout the festive week. But on Good Friday and Easter Sunday they will introduce a reduced schedule — from 9:30 to 15:00.
The Alcampo network schedule, with the exception of some selected communities, will look like this: from 9:00 to 21:00 (or 22:00) Monday to Saturday and from 10:00 to 21:00 on Sundays. However, it’s better to check the company’s website to see what schedule applies in your city. This is especially true on Holy Thursday and Good Friday.
Aldi shops will close on 28 and 29 March and on 1 April. Some will only be open during the morning hours throughout Easter week. More information can be found on the retailer’s website.
Some Consum shops and their Charter franchisees plan to operate throughout Holy Week, but on a modified schedule. This primarily affects outlets located in tourist areas. But the rest, in all likelihood, will be closed on Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday. Check this in advance on the website.
