The Spanish state-owned company Aena, which operates public airports, has opened the country’s first pet-friendly zone at Madrid Barajas Airport.
The pet park is located in the arrivals hall of Terminal 1 and covers approximately 50 m². There is everything for owners to have a good time with their furry pets — a place to play, a sandbox, a drinking fountain, a bag dispenser, a trash can, and a bench.
And this is just the beginning. Aena announced plans to install similar facilities in other airport terminals. An open pet-friendly space will appear in the arrivals hall of Terminal 4. Three closed areas will be located in the departure areas of Terminals 2, 4, and 4S.
The initiative to create pet-friendly spaces is an expected response from Aena to the growing trend in the tourism industry to provide services for travelers with pets. The importance of such changes in this economic sector was especially emphasized by Guillermo Alfaro, founder of Appmypets Digital Pet ID, during the FITUR 2024 tourism fair.
