The attacker entered the territory of the Spanish winery Cepa 21 and opened five wine tanks – three of them were filled. As a result, 60,000 liters of alcohol, enough to fill about 80,000 bottles, spilled onto the warehouse floor. Cepa 21 wines range from $44 to $100. The criminal destroyed a drink with a long aging period, which can no longer be produced again. Thus, the company suffered losses of 2.7 million dollars (2.5 million euros).
During his crime, the unknown person was captured on CCTV cameras. The recording shows that the criminal freely navigated the territory of the winery in the dark, and also easily opened the locks of the wine tanks, equipped with a special security mechanism. This suggests that he could be a current or former employee of Cepa 21. However, there is no reason to place suspicion on anyone at the moment.
Winery owner José Moro told Spanish public television TVE: “This is a case of causing harm for the sake of causing harm, committed by an unstable person who lacks common sense and acts out of hatred.”
The Cepa 21 winery was opened in 2007. It is located in the municipality of Castrillo de Duero (province of Valladolid) in the Ribera del Duero wine region. It is surrounded by 50 hectares of vineyards where the Tinto Fino variety is grown. The company’s flagship red wine bears its name – Cepa 21. The company is actively developing wine tourism. The winery has its restaurant led by chef Alberto Soto. Guests can enjoy various tastings, visits to the nearby Wine Museum and Penafiel Castle, and other recreational activities.
