Barcelona has increased the tourist tax: how much will have to pay extra in 2024

The city authorities of Barcelona announced an increase in the tourist tax in the new season of 2024. This measure was taken to combat excessive tourism.

Barcelona is the most visited city in Spain — more than 32 million travelers come here every year.

For the first time the introduction of additional tourist fees, in addition to the general regional tourist fee, was announced in 2012. And in 2022 — reported on a phased increase in the city fee over the next 2 years.

Thus currently the regional tourist fee is for:

  • rented accommodation (Airbnb, etc.) — €2.25;
  • four-star hotels — €1.70;
  • five-star and luxury hotels — €3.50;
  • cruise ship passengers who stay in the city for up to 12 hours — €3, and for more than this period — €2.

Barcelona’s city tourist tax in 2024 is only levied on official tourist accommodation. It is now €3.25 per day.

It must be included on the invoice, with the amount of the levy and the number of days of stay stated separately.

The Barcelona City Tourist Fee must be paid electronically to the Agència Tributària de Catalunya. Although this must be done by guests, it is the responsibility of the hotel and accommodation owners to execute and settle the payment.

Barcelona’s additional city tourist tax is limited to 7 days and children under 16 are exempt from it.

Thus, travelers planning to visit Barcelona will pay the rate of the regional tourist tax and €3.25 for the additional city tax.
