Barcelona will host mass events and rallies for International Women’s Day

Every year on March 8th, Barcelona hosts many events in honor of International Women’s Day, dedicated to the fight for gender equality and the rights of all women. To make sure you don’t miss the most important events of Women’s Day 2024 in the Catalan capital, use the guide to 8-M in Barcelona, highlighting the main events and locations.

Representatives of the Students’ Union will demonstrate at noon. It starts at Plaza de la Universidad, runs along Carrer Pelai, Plaça Catalunya, Via Laietana, Carrer Fontanella, Carrer Jaume, and ends at Plaza Sant Jaume. The main goal of the action is to demonstrate that “the majority of student youth are feminist, anti-fascist, anti-capitalist and internationalist, and protect the rights of transsexuals and the LGTB community.”

At 6:00 p.m. a large demonstration will begin, hosted by Assemblea 8-M. It calls on women, lesbians, and transgender people to speak out against instability, borders, and genocide, called the “three axes of violence” that women suffer. The march will start from the Jardinets de Gràcia along Passeig de Gràcia and Ronda de Sant Pere and stop at the Arc de Triomphe, where the final event will take place.

Assemblea 8M is a coordination space that brings together various feminist groups, unions, district committees, territorial assemblies, and organizations from all over Catalonia.

Zumba classes will be held at Carmel Market Square to celebrate Women’s Day at 6:30 p.m. This is a free event and participants will receive gifts.

A film forum dedicated to Women’s Day is planned at the Casal de Gent Gran de la Verneda Alta. There will be a screening of the film “Hidden Figures”, followed by a dialogue about aspects related to the role of women. These events will take place twice – at 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

The Barcelona Maritime Museum presents the permanent exhibition “Women Go to Sea. Threads and knots of invisible history” dedicated to Women’s Day. The exhibition is open to the public every day from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Full ticket price is 10 euros, reduced ticket price is 5 euros.

On Saturday 9 March at 8:30 pm, feminist space Ca la Dona is hosting Fista del 8 de març, a “non-mixed” event aimed “at lesbians and trans women.” Its goal is to “earn the right to joy and pleasure together, and even more so in a context where we are oppressed, broken, and isolated by the violence of instability, borders, and genocide.” According to the organizers, “meetings, hugs, dancing, laughing together are also a form of protest.” Venue: Paral lel 62 concert hall, time: 8:30 p.m. Tickets cost 3 euros if booked in advance.

Events and protests dedicated to International Women’s Day will be held in many municipalities of different regions of Spain – Tarragona, Fraga, Zaragoza, Navarre, Logroño, Bilbao, San Sebastian, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Santander, Gijon, Oviedo, La Coruña, Santiago- de Compostela and others.
