Costa Blanca fights against illegal street vendors: irresponsible tourists face fines

Spain is introducing a crackdown on unlicensed street vendors in the Costa Blanca region. These so-called “monteros” lay out their wares on top of blankets laid out on the sidewalks. They offer a wide variety of counterfeits at low prices — from ordinary souvenirs to fake designer glasses and bags. However, now tourists who were tempted by the cheap prices and made a purchase from such a merchant will pay a fine of 200 euros.

During the peak holiday season, plainclothes police will patrol the streets of the seaside towns in the province of Alicante and fine irresponsible travelers. Tourists vacationing in Torrevieja should be especially careful. The mayor of this municipality, known for its beaches and excellent climate, has already called for an increased police presence to enforce trading rules. The crackdown comes as local store owners are losing up to 30% of their profits to unlicensed sellers.

It is expected that fines for tourists will also be resorted to in the Costa del Sol region. Authorities are forced to deal with traveling street vendors, known locally as “hombres guapos.”  They are often seen near beaches selling trinkets, clothing and other counterfeit goods to tourists. Most of these traders are not licensed.

Considering all of the above, travelers should buy souvenirs in officially operating stores. Otherwise, there will always be a risk of getting a fine and ruining your vacation experience.
