Useful information for tourists

Portuguese man o’ war already on the beaches of Spain

This year, Portuguese man o’ war (Physalia) appeared on Spanish beaches earlier than usual. These seemingly harmless animals, resembling jellyfish, are actually quite dangerous. Their hunting tentacles have many stinging cells. The burn is accompanied by severe pain, and the poison can cause anaphylactic shock. Physalia are found on the beaches of the Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias, Galicia, Andalusia, Costa Brava, Valencia, and the Canary Islands. We recommend that you exercise caution and do not try to pick up the animals.

Smoking ban on Catalan beaches

More and more beach lovers are demanding a ban on smoking on the coast. And not only because of the harm to health, but also because many smokers throw cigarette butts in the sand, which harms the ecosystem. The first non-smoking beach in Spain appeared in 2006. It was Platja Nova in the municipality of L’Escala (Catalonia). Since then, the number of such places in the region has increased significantly. Now smoking is prohibited on the following beaches:

  • Girona province — Palafrugell, Lloret de Mar, Begur, Sant Feliu de Guíxols;
  • Barcelona province — El Masnou, Pineda de Mar, Barcelona, Calella.

Fines for violators can reach 750 euros.

Abnormal summer heat in Valencia

Valencia is experiencing the first wave of abnormal heat with temperatures rising to +44 ºC. Those who dare to go for a walk around the city during the day are advised to take water with them. You can always refill your bottles at one of the free fountains that appeared in Valencia back in 2020. There are more than 50 of them in the city, and they are located in the most popular tourist spots. Thanks to the map developed by the municipal tourism portal Visit València, you can find the nearest fountain to fill your bottles.

Those who want to refresh themselves should remember that back in 2023, the Valencia City Council temporarily banned swimming in the decorative fountains and ponds of Parc Central. Violators face a fine of 750 euros. The only area where swimming is permitted is the fountain with jets of water near the entrance to Calle Felipe. It is ideal for children to play.
