From September 1, restrictions on the carriage of liquids in hand luggage are in force in the EU

On September 1, new rules regarding liquids in hand luggage came into force at airports in the European Union. Now all of them, as well as pastes, aerosols and gels must be in containers with a volume of less than 100 ml. They must be placed in a transparent plastic bag before passing through control at any EU airport.

Previously, European Union airports with explosives detection systems for carry-on baggage (EDSCB) allowed travelers to carry liquids larger than 100 ml in their carry-on baggage. A new European Commission decision reverses this relaxation. Now, containers larger than 100 ml must be placed in checked baggage.

If liquids are bought in duty-free stores at airports or on airlines, they can be carried in hand luggage. But provided they are sealed together with the receipt in a protective bag with a red frame, which is provided at the time of purchase. The package cannot be opened before arrival at the destination. But it can be opened for inspection by security personnel. If a passenger has a connecting flight at another airport, he or she must inform local service staff, who will seal the liquids in a new bag. 

The European Commission emphasizes that the adopted restrictions are a temporary measure. It will remain in force until the software of explosives scanners is improved.

In addition to the restrictions on the transportation of liquids, the European Commission presented recommendations regarding the size of hand luggage:

• weight — no more than 10 kg;
• quantity — hand luggage + one personal item;
• dimensions — 55x40x20 cm for hand luggage and 40x30x15 cm for personal items.

But it is worth considering that there is no legislation regulating the size and weight of hand luggage. Therefore, each airline can set the rules it considers appropriate.
