King Philip VI of Spain celebrates his first decade on the throne
A series of institutional events to mark the 10th anniversary of His Majesty Philip VI’s proclamation as King of Spain are taking place today, 19 June, in Madrid. And the first is the presence of the monarchial family at the ceremonial change of the Royal Guard. Their Majesties the King and Queen, accompanied by Their Royal Highnesses the Princess of Asturias and the Infanta Doña Sofia, watched from the balcony of the throne room of the Royal Palace of Madrid the parade, in which 359 royal guards and 86 horses took part.
Next, the King and Queen, accompanied by Princess Leonora and Infanta Sofia, held a ceremony to present the Orders of Civil Merit. These awards were presented to 19 recipients whose life path and professionalism in their work is a model of service to society and worthy of the Crown’s high recognition.
The next protocol event to mark the tenth anniversary of Philip VI’s accession to the throne was a formal dinner held in the Gala Dining Room of the Royal Palace. It was attended by around 100 guests, including Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and the aforementioned laureates.
Another celebratory event will take place tonight at 8 pm in the Royal Collection Gallery at the palace. Their Royal Highnesses the Princess of Asturias and the Infanta Doña Sofia will host a meeting here with the young participants in the «What is the King for you?» competition organized by the Spanish Institutional Foundation (FIES).
Also tonight, the Plaza de Oriente will host a concert by the Royal Guardian Orchestra with the participation of world-renowned Spanish violinist Ara Malikian. But this event is not listed on the royal family’s official schedule, so it is likely that the monarchs will not attend.
And tomorrow, 20 June, the King and Queen will open the exhibition «Philip VI: A Decade in the History of the Crown of Spain» at the Royal Palace in Madrid. After that, the King will travel to Germany to support the Spanish football team in a match against Italy at Euro 2024.
