Madrid was selected as the most popular LGTBIQ+ destination in Spain

Madrid has been ranked as the most popular LGTBIQ+ destination in Spain. YouGov, a company specializing in market research, conducted the Regional Destination Index survey.

This index assesses the image of Spain’s regions in terms of their perception as LGTBIQ+ friendly destinations, as well as safety, diversity of nightlife and gastronomy, economic accessibility, and so on.

Madrid has long had a reputation as a friendly, fun, and tolerant city where diversity, freedom, and respect are defining features of everyday life. Its famous Chueca neighbourhood has been the centre of life for the LGTBIQA+ community since the early 90s. Here, tourists will find a variety of nightclubs, bars, restaurants, bookshops and fashion boutiques.

In addition, Madrid’s annual Pride celebrations, which last a week and attract over 1.5 million participants, kick off on 28 June.

Travellers will also benefit from knowing that the resource Statista, using data from the Gay Travel Index 2024 report, has ranked Spain among the top five safest travel destinations for LGTBIQ+.

«The 2024 classification compared 213 countries and regions based on the situation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer people in their territories,» explains Statista. Spain, Malta, Canada, Portugal, and New Zealand topped the rankings with the same 12-point result.
