Merida hosts the 70th International Classical Theater Festival

The Mérida International Festival of Classical Theatre began its 70th anniversary season on 27 June 2024. The event opened with a performance of the opera Medea, which was a resounding success with the public. Soprano Angeles Blancas as Medea and tenor Noah Stewart as Jason captivated the audience with their masterful performances accompanied by the Extremadura Orchestra. The performance traditionally took place in the historic Roman Theater of Merida, where a new 500-seat grandstand opened in Cavea Media. The opera was re-staged on June 29.

The Mérida International Classical Theater Festival  will last until August 25. 

Its program includes 9 performances, 7 of which will be presented to the public for the first time. In addition to the main stage of the festival — Teatro Romano de Mérida — productions will take place at Teatro María Luisa.

In addition to Medea, the following premieres will take place on the stage of the Teatro Romano de Mérida:

  • July 3 – 7 — comedy The Apparition of Menander (La aparición de Menandro);
  • July 10 – 14 — comedy Icons or the Study of Fate (Iconos o la exploración del destino);
  • July 17 – 21 — comedy La Paz by Aristophanes (La Paz);
  • July 24 – 28 — Shakespeare’s drama Coriolan (Coriolano);
  • July 31 – August 4 and August 7 – 11 — tragicomedy Medusa
  • August 6 — ballet Dido and Aeneas (Dido y Eneas);
  • August 14 -18 — tragedy Tiresias (Tiresias);
  • August 21 – 25 — tragedy Ifigenia.

The program of the Maria Luisa Theater includes 7 performances:

  • July 6 — Monsters. The Miracle of the Gods (Monstruos. El prodigio de los dioses);
  • July 13 — Coriolan (Coriolano);
  • July 20 — Barrabás;
  • July 27 — Lisistrata Montoya (Lisístrata Montoya);
  • July 28 — Cassandra;
  • August 3 — Oedipus the King (Edipo Rey);
  • August 4 — Elektra 25 (Elektra 25).

In addition to performances, festival guests will enjoy many interesting events – master classes, exhibitions, seminars, children’s and family entertainment. The International Festival of Classical Theatre in Mérida is one of the most important events of its kind, not only in Spain but also in the whole world. Every year it attracts tens of thousands of spectators, presenting the greatest works of classical Greco-Latin theatre. The main stage of the event is the Roman Theatre of Mérida, which opened in 16-15 BC.
