The Mérida International Festival of Classical Theatre began its 70th anniversary season on 27 June 2024. The event opened with a performance of the opera Medea, which was a resounding success with the public. Soprano Angeles Blancas as Medea and tenor Noah Stewart as Jason captivated the audience with their masterful performances accompanied by the Extremadura Orchestra. The performance traditionally took place in the historic Roman Theater of Merida, where a new 500-seat grandstand opened in Cavea Media. The opera was re-staged on June 29.
The Mérida International Classical Theater Festival will last until August 25.
Its program includes 9 performances, 7 of which will be presented to the public for the first time. In addition to the main stage of the festival — Teatro Romano de Mérida — productions will take place at Teatro María Luisa.
