New international air routes to Spain and changes to EU border crossing rules

Spanish airports will start to receive new international flights. The first direct flight from Seville-San Pablo Airport to Istanbul’s Sabiha Gökçen Airport will depart as early as 24 September. The flight will be operated by Pegasus Airlines, a low-cost Turkish airline. Its duration is 4.5 hours. Flights are scheduled three times a week: on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

And Valencia Airport is preparing to launch two new international routes next spring. Direct flights to Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland, will be operated from 24 May until the end of September. The carrier will be the Icelandic company PLAY Airlines. The schedule includes two flights per week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

In addition, continuing the theme of strengthening ties with northern European countries, the number of direct flights to Denmark will be increased. SAS Airlines will begin operating two flights per week to Copenhagen.

International travellers should be aware that from 10 November, the new EU entry/exit system (EES) will come into effect. Non-EU travellers who do not require a visa to enter the Schengen area will now need to scan their passports at a self-service kiosk each time they cross an external EU border. The system will record the date and place of entry and exit, biometric data and the traveller’s name.

EES has been introduced in all EU states except Cyprus and Ireland. It also works in four non-EU Schengen countries: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.
