New tourist destination in Spain — Santa Eulalia de Oscos awarded the title of Rural Tourism Capital 2024

The Spanish portal Escapada Rural, specializing in country accommodation, announced on April 18 the results of the VIII competition Capital of Rural Tourism. The 2024 winner is the village of Santa Eulalia de Oscos in the autonomous community of Asturias in northwestern Spain.

More than 200 municipalities from all regions of the country took part in the competition. About 80,000 traveler votes were cast for them. Santa Eulalia de Oscos received first place with a score of 22.8%. This is a charming village surrounded by mountains and deciduous forests, which are famous for their abundance of rivers and waterfalls. Santa Eulalia de Oscos prides itself on its amazing gastronomy and the preservation of traditional crafts.

Second place in the competition with 14.9% of the votes was taken by the municipality of Altura (province of Castellon, Valencia). And third is the city of Cabezuela del Valle in the province of Caceres (Extremadura), which scored 11.7%. The top ten contenders for victory also included Artajona (Navarre), Brihuega (Castile-La Mancha), Competa (Andalusia), Enciso (Rioja), Peñafiel (Castile and Leon), Sant Ilari-Sacalm (Catalonia), Vilaflor ( Canary Islands).

The Capital of Rural Tourism competition has been running since 2017 to highlight municipalities in Spain that are committed to developing rural tourism. The winners of previous competitions were:

  • Campo Lameiro (Galicia, 2023);
  • Cazorla (Andalusia, 2022);
  • Olvera (Andalusia, 2021);
  • Potes (Cantabria, 2020);
  • Santillana del Mar (Cantabria, 2019);
  • Ainza-Sobrarbe (Aragon, 2018);
  • Siguenza (Castilla-La Mancha, 2017).
