Pontevedra will host a medieval fair this weekend

This weekend, Pontevedra (Galicia) will once again be transported back to the Middle Ages. On September 6 and 7, the city will host Pontevedra Feira Franca, one of the region’s most important historical festivals. The event, which attracts more than 100,000 participants each year, was declared a festival of tourist interest in Galicia in 2013.

Each year, Pontevedra Feira Franca is dedicated to a specific theme. For example, in 2017 it was medieval bestiaries, in 2018 it was legends, in 2019 and 2022 it was the Leres River. In 2023, the holiday was dedicated to numbers. And in 2024, the theme of the fair was minstrelsy.

For two days, the atmosphere of the Middle Ages will reign in the streets of Pontevedra. Locals and tourists wishing to participate in the festivities will dress in period costumes. Blacksmiths, master craftsmen, weavers, lacemakers, carpenters and musicians will come to the market square. Food stalls will be set up on Rúa Pasantería, Alameda Park, Praza da Ferrería and Praza de Curros Enríquez, while the craft market will be on Avenida de Santa María. In addition, Praza da Ferrería and Praza Peirao will offer demonstrations of ancient crafts.

The program of Pontevedra Feira Franca 2024 includes many entertainment events. Falconry, fencing, archery, dancing, concerts of medieval music and parades are waiting for festival guests. One of the most interesting events is the wine transportation. This historical reenactment recreates the medieval wine trade in the streets of the city. Also worth a visit are the jousting tournaments that will be held in the bullfighting arena. The full program of Pontevedra Feira Franca can be downloaded here.
