Princess Leonor, heiress to the Spanish throne, starts her studies at the Marín Naval School (Escuela Naval de Marín) today, 29 August 2024. The school is located in the city of Pontevedra. The Princess of Asturias will stay there as a midshipman until January 2025. She will then embark on a four-month voyage aboard the training ship Juan Sebastián Elcano. In doing so, Her Royal Highness continues an important family tradition. In 1987, her father, King Felipe VI of Spain, undertook a similar voyage. Before him, in 1958, the Princess’s grandfather, King Juan Carlos I, also made the same voyage.
On July 3, 2024, Princess Leonor completed her first year of military training at the Academia General Militar in Zaragoza. Studying at the Escuela Naval de Marín will be the second stage of her military training, which she is required to complete as the future Spanish monarch and commander-in-chief of the country’s Armed Forces. The third and final stage of this process is training at the General Aerospace Academy (Academia General del Aire y del Espacio), which will conclude in 2026.
Shortly before entering the Naval School, on July 23, Princess Leonor was promoted to the rank of midshipman first class of the 427th Regiment of the General Naval Corps.
It is noted that no special conditions will be made for the Princess at the Escuela Naval de Marín. The heiress to the Spanish throne will live in a common room with three other girls and will follow the same strict discipline and regime as the other students.
