Real Madrid reached the semi-finals of the 2024 Champions League on April 17 after a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout victory over Manchester City. The ordinary time of the match ended with the score 1-1. The first goal in the 12th minute of the game was sent into the Citizen’s goal by Los Merengues striker Rodrigo, striking twice from close range. Kevin De Bruyne, the Manchester City midfielder, equalized in the 76th minute with a shot high into the net from close range. Pep Guardiola’s side continued to dominate the field but were unable to score the winning goal in either ordinary time or extra time.
The real star of the penalty shootout was Real Madrid goalkeeper, Ukrainian Andrey Lunin. He masterfully saved shots from Mateo Kovacic and Bernardo Silva. Antonio Rudiger’s penalty into the bottom corner of the Manchester City goal allowed Los Blancos to reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League and claim a record 15th title in the tournament.
Real Madrid’s next match will be against Bayern Munich on April 30. The winner will face Paris Saint-Germain or Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final on June 1 at Wembley Stadium.
