Spain celebrates La Rioja Day, the country’s famous wine region on June 9

Every year on June 9, Día de La Rioja is celebrated as an official holiday in the Spanish Autonomous Community of La Rioja. It is held to commemorate the signing of the Statute of Autonomy of La Rioja, which took place on this day in 1982.

Celebrations take place in all municipalities of the region, but the most interesting programs await tourists in its largest cities — Logroño, Haro, Calahorra and Arnedo. It hosts children’s and sporting events, concerts of modern and traditional music, parades and street dancing, fairs and wine tastings. Visit the official websites of municipalities to find out about the schedule of events.

Rioja is the smallest region in Spain by area. But it is known all over the world thanks to the wonderful wines that are produced here. Also, the famous pilgrimage route The Way of St. James passes through it, which we wrote about here.

The presentation of the La Rioja Medal is one of the most important institutional events dedicated to the region’s day. This high award is a symbol of the region’s identity and recognizes the exceptional services of an individual or organization to the Rioja community. It is traditionally awarded within the walls of the Yuso Monastery in San Millan de la Cogolla. In 2024, the award went to the Federation of Municipalities of Rioja and Fernando Riaño, who was born in Haro and is a long-distance duathlon world champion.
