The Spanish national team has become the first semi-finalist of Euro 2024. The team defeated Germany 2-1 in the 1/4 finals, snatching victory in extra time. The match was played on the evening of 5 July at the Stuttgart Arena in Germany.
From the first minutes of the match, Spain seized the initiative, and the Germans hoped for quick counterattacks. The match started quite intensively. And already in 8 minutes due to injury, midfielder of the Spanish national team Pedri left the field and was replaced by Dani Olmo. But in general, the first half of the game was relatively calm and without bright moments.
The most interesting events happened in the second half. It started with the Spanish attacks. La Furia Roja captain Alvaro Morata got a chance to score, but shot over the goal. Spain midfielder Dani Olmo opened the scoring on 51 minutes. From outside the penalty box, he hit into the bottom left corner of the goal after a pass from Lamin Yamal. The Germans managed to get back into the game just a minute before the end of the main time thanks to a goal by Florian Wirtz.
In overtime, the initiative in the game went to the German national team, which was close to victory several times. But Spain again managed to take the lead. Midfielder Mikel Merino scored the decisive goal for DFB-Elf in 119 minutes.
In the semifinals of the European Championship, Luis de la Fuente’s team will play with the winner of the Portugal-France pair.
The national teams of Spain and Germany played 26 joint matches. In 9 of them the Germans won, the same number of meetings ended in a draw, and 8 — the Spaniards won. At the European Championship 2024, both teams took the first place in their groups and won in the 1/8 finals.
