Spain has declared three days of national mourning for the victims of flooding in the Valencia region

From 31 October to 2 November 2024, Spain has declared three days of national mourning for the victims of flooding in the region of Valencia. So far, 95 people have fallen victim to the disaster, and dozens are missing.

Catastrophic flooding in the autonomous community occurred due to heavy rains. Valencia saw a year’s worth of rainfall in just one day. More than one hundred thousand people were left without electricity and communication. Many roads were blocked, and rail and air services were disrupted. Schools and essential social services are temporarily out of operation in the most affected parts of the region.

Search and rescue operations continue, with the military, firefighters, and police all participating. Psychologists are working with the victims. A hotline has been opened for those looking for relatives missing due to the flooding.

The country’s authorities have promised to provide all necessary assistance to the residents of the affected areas. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez addressed them on TV and said: «All Spain is mourning with you». On 31 October, he will arrive in Valencia to attend a crisis centre meeting.

The editors of Spain Voyages express their sympathy and support to the victims and the families of the victims.
