The beaches of Barcelona have opened the 2024 swimming season. This year it will be extended from September 30 to October 27, due to the 37th America’s Cup, an international sailing competition, being held in Barcelona.
The Barcelona City Council annually draws up a Barcelona Beach Season Plan. It regulates the operation and provision of services and includes all requirements established by the competent authorities. Thus, the operating hours for rescue and information services, as well as public toilets, have been drawn up. The plan is divided into three swimming periods: middle, high, and low.
Average swimming season 2024 in Barcelona includes dates:
During this time, lifeguard services and assistance facilities on beaches will be open to visitors from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. As for public toilets, they will be available from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., except for toilets on the beaches of Sant Sebastià, Sant Miquel, Nova Mar Bella, and Nova Icària beaches.
Information centers on the beaches of Sant Sebastià, la Barceloneta, el Bogatell, and Mar Bella will be open: in April from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and in May from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. In September, centers on the beaches of Sant Sebastià, la Barceloneta, and el Bogatell will continue to operate from Monday to Friday. And on the beaches of Mar Bella, Nova Mar Bella, and Llevant — on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
The high season for swimming is set from May 25 to September 11. According to the plan, rescue services and aid stations on beaches will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and information centers will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Public toilets will open from 10:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Low season — the rest of the year not listed above. Holidaymakers should be aware that there is no rescue service on the beaches at this time, and in case of emergency, they should call 112. Beach management offices at the Bogatell breakwater and public toilets at the Gas, Somorrostro, and Bogatell breakwaters will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
An unpleasant innovation for vacationers on all Barcelona beaches is the shutdown of showers and foottaps. These are necessary water-saving measures due to the drought in Catalonia.
