The peak activity of the Perseids is expected on August 12-13

The peak activity of the Perseid meteor shower, which in Spain is called the «Tears of San Lorenzo», is expected on the nights of August 11-12 and 12-13. Under ideal conditions, you can see up to 100 shooting stars per hour at this time. But for this, it is recommended to go far away from large cities so that the so-called light pollution does not interfere with admiring the meteors.

A researcher at the National Astronomical Observatory (Observatorio Astronómico Nacional, OAN) Miguel Querejeta recommends observing the Perseids starting at midnight, when the Moon sets. The radiant (the point from which meteors emerge) is located in the northeast, in the constellation Perseus. It reaches its greatest height early in the morning, so the maximum number of shooting stars is observed in the second half of the night.

The astronomer also notes that the exact frequency of meteors is very difficult to calculate. Their number depends greatly on the weather, the phase of the moon, the place and time of observation. According to OAN, about 75 shooting stars per hour are expected on the night from Saturday to Sunday, and 86 from Sunday to Monday. But at midnight, when the radiant is not at its zenith, you can see at best 20-30 meteors per hour, even if you are far from cities. Before dawn, the rate increases slightly and, under ideal conditions, is 30-40 meteors per hour. But in reality, with little light pollution, you can see about 10-15 shooting stars.

To admire the Perseid meteor shower, you don’t need binoculars or telescopes. Bring sun loungers, blankets and warm clothes if you plan to watch the falling stars until the morning. It is recommended to go away from the city to where the sky will be as dark as possible, get comfortable and be patient.

Astronomy enthusiasts from Catalonia can watch the meteor shower at one of the locations that have received the Starlight Foundation certificate. It is awarded to places with the best conditions for contemplating the starry sky. These include:

  • Albaña (Girona);
  • Montsec Astronomical Park;
  • Parc Astronòmic Muntanyes de Prades;
  • Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park;
  • Montgai (Lleida);
  • Saldes (Barcelona).

The sky here is perfectly dark, so you will be able to see the peak of the Perseid meteor shower in all its glory.
